In 2020-21, Rutgers granted $7.7 million in scholarships for 272 female athletes, compared to $6.2 million for 291 male athletes. While Rutgers has granted more scholarships to male athletes every year since entering the Big Ten, some years it spent more on female scholarships.
There’s relative parity with athletic scholarships.Take out football’s $1.4 million travel bill, and men’s teams still spent $575,000 more than women’s on travel. Rutgers’ women’s teams spent $2.1 million on travel in 2020-21, just 52% of what men’s teams spent.Take out the $2.6 million for football, and the nine other men’s teams had a nearly $90,000 advantage over the 14 women’s teams. Rutgers spent $1.2 million on equipment, uniforms and supplies for women’s teams in 2020-21, just 31% of what it spent on those items for men’s teams.(Very little was spent in 2020-21 because of COVID travel restrictions.) Rutgers spent $761,000 to recruit football players and another $356,700 to recruit other male athletes in 2019-20 for a combined $1.1 million, compared to $488,500 to recruit women athletes.
